Deep Democracy starts at the grassroots and ends up with substantive change at the top. Elite power-holders never yield willingly. They have to be pushed. By people power. By the awakening of what Henry Kissinger fearfully referred to as 'the sleeping beast of public dissent.'
When legendary African American labor organizer A. Philip Randolph told the newly-elected FDR of his union's demands, Roosevelt is said to have responded that he agreed with the justice of the desired labor policy, but concluded, "Make me do it."
That's the way it's been. With abolition, with womens' sufferage, with labor rights, with voting rights, with civil rights. In South Africa, East Timor, Thailand, the Philippines, Bolivia, Equador,Venezuela. Imperfect in every specific incarnation.† But inexorable. Kissinger's 'sleeping beast' is coming awake. All around the planet. On every issue, at every level. The backroom oligarchs - in banks, corporations and in the President's inner circle - are taking note and formulating their response.
That then-candidate Obama is himself reported to have used that FDR story during the campaign when asked about changing U.S. middle-east policy suggests that - just maybe - now-President Obama expects, needs and wants to be pushed by massive public pressure if he is to make real change that we don't have to make believe in.
Since 2004 we at EON have been producing documentaries and video reports on what has come to be called 'the election protection movement' in the United States. We also traveled to the Philippines to document the corresponding grassroots fight for electoral integrity there.
