Media Activism for System Change
Chapter 9
Planetarian Perspectives
2007 - We were commissioned to cover a London conference on averting the global 'triple crisis' of climate change, peak oil and species extinctions sponsored by IFG, the International Forum on Globalization.
The result was the 3-DVD set pictured below, solution ideas as relevent today as they were then.
On our DVD From Ecotopia to Solartopia: A Visionary Conversation authors Ernest Callenbach (Ecotopia, 1975) and Harvey Wasserman (Solartopia, 2007) discuss the role of the visionary novelist in opening public discourse to 'outside the box' possibilities. They look at the many elements of Callenbach's Ecotopian vision that have actually come into being (and some that haven't yet) and explore the catalytic power of realistic hope to shape the present and the future.

They agree the time has come to democratically enlarge our vision of sustainable society from local, national and regional spheres to the planetary context.

The transcript and vlog link is on-line at Smirking Chimp, Huffpost and Pathways Magazine, where it got over 100,000 hits in July, 2009 alone.
Twenty-four of the world's leading activists, scientists, and thinkers, from Europe, Asia, and the U.S., speak about the convergence of planetary threats now upon us, and how we can organize to meet them.

Our coverage of what we call the 'planetization movement' and thinkers with a 'planetarian perspective' includes vlog posts and DVDs presenting the views of people like water rights campaigner Maude Barlow, global justice campaigners like Walden Bello, Susan George, Vandana Shiva, David Korten and policy analyist Chalmers Johnson. Johnson's posts on our YouTube have drawn thousands of viewers.
