Media Activism for System Change
Chapter 7
Election Protection in the Philippines
2007 found us in the Philippines in the dual roles of filmmakers and members of an international election observer mission organized by the Compact for Peaceful Elections, a coalition of election protection NGOs. We followed two reform candidates in the violently contested, fraud-fraught election: Fr. Ed Panlilio (left), a country priest, and Walden Bello (below), economist, author and global justice organizer. [Also a long-time friend and founding EON Advisory Board Member.]
In the end, both candidates won against all odds, though it took a year of litigation for Representative Bello to be sworn in, and Gov. Panlilio faced a recount in August, 2009 after nearly 2 years in office.
(left) Jim was a panelist on national TV in his role as international election observer.
Their 2010 election will be the first in which electronic voting machines will be deployed...as a 'solution' for election fraud!
Recent U.S. experience shows electronic voting actually makes fraud easier.
